Defender of his people, Chief Leschi led the combined warriors of the Puget Sound Tribes in a struggle for survival. He is revered by his people and respected by all who know of him. He sacrificed everything to assure a future for his people in their homeland. During the summer of 2000, this portrait was displayed at the Nisqually Tribal Center near Olympia, Washington. It graces the Melton Publishing web site headings as a tribute to Chief Leschi and his unselfish service as a leader. The artist has rendered the subject in colors of rich cast bronze, but it retains an aura of life and vitality. The shadow of the eagle is imposed on a vibrant red background. Its head resembles profiles of the sacred bird carved in typical Northwest Native American tradition.
