Ruth & the Gleaners

In ancient Jewish society, harvesting was done by hand, and the harvesters were allowed only one pass over the fields and vineyards to gather the crops. The poor gathered what they left behind. The story of Ruth is one of the most charming the Bible has to offer. This painting captures her strength. Bracing against a stiff wind, shading her eyes with her hand, Ruth peers out over the field and past the gleaners. What do you suppose has caught her attention? Framed. (Original)
